The Texas Legends Tournament is one of the most anticipated offshore fishing competitions on the Gulf Coast, and the 2025 edition proved why. Held August 6-10, this year marked the 20th Annual Texas Legends Billfish Tournament, bringing together some of the best offshore fishing teams from across the state. Boats were allowed to depart from any Texas port, but all eyes were on Port Aransas for the August 9 weigh-in at Fisherman’s Wharf, followed by the winners’ celebration at Grumbles Restaurant on August 10th.

With 37 teams competing for over $700,000 in cash prizes and trophies, the event lived up to its “legendary” reputation. A record-breaking number of 199 billfish were released during the two-day fishing competition, cementing this year as one for the history books.

What is the Texas Legends Tournament?

For those new to the sport or the Port A fishing scene, the Texas Legends Tournament isn’t just another offshore fishing event; it’s a tribute. Dedicated to Texans who left a lasting mark on the fishing community, this tournament honors their memory by fostering the same camaraderie, skill, and passion they embodied.

What makes this fishing tournament unique is its team-based structure. Unlike most competitions where individual anglers are recognized, this fishing tournament considers the boat and crew as one competitor. It’s about teamwork, communication, and precision both on the water and on the deck.

Another defining element? It was the first tournament in Texas to pioneer the billfish release format. Instead of focusing solely on weight, teams earn points for releasing billfish species, with the exception of Blue Marlin over 106 inches, which may be brought to the dock and scored at one point per pound. If the Blue Marlin tips the scales past 600 pounds, an additional 1,000-point bonus is awarded. For meat fish like tuna, wahoo, and dorado, each pound equals one point.

“Jungle Rules” on the Open Water

Perhaps the most talked-about feature of the Texas Legends is its “Jungle Rules” format. In simple terms, the only official regulations apply to fishing tackle; beyond that, it’s up to the captains and crews to determine their strategies.

This rule style opens the door for innovative approaches to offshore fishing, making the tournament as much about creativity and problem-solving as it is about reeling in the big one. Teams are free to fish their way, adapt to the conditions, and take risks that might be off-limits in more restrictive tournaments.

The format also builds excitement for spectators and fellow anglers. With fewer restrictions, the action is fast-paced and unpredictable, which is exactly what makes the Texas Legends a highlight of the Port Aransas fishing calendar.

199 Billfish Released

This year’s Texas Legends Tournament didn’t just meet expectations; it blew them out of the water. Over two days, the 37 competing teams released 199 billfish, a record for the event. Here’s a look at the standout performances:
