Charter Fishing vs. Pier Fishing

Charter fishing vs. pier fishing—what’s the difference? Well, charter fishing is out on a boat, with a captain, sailing across the shores to catch fish. Pier fishing, as you may have guessed, is off a pier.

Charter FishingCharter fishing vs. pier fishing—charter fishing boat

When on the sea, fishing with an experienced, personal captain, you are charter fishing. Oftentimes, charter fishing is over shores that are less than one hundred or so feet. After this, the expedition is considered to be deep-sea fishing. Another key point to remember is all charter fishing is offshore. It’s hard to sail with a captain aboard the dock!

Fisherman’s Wharf is also home to many captains, many of which who grew up living and breathing the sea. We offer private charters for you and your family, and our captains are ready to serve you. Whether you want to go on a Tuna Fishing Charter, or a private trip ranging from six hours to fifty-six, we have captains to serve you. Find a list of our charter fishing captains here.

Pier FishingCharter fishing vs. pier fishing—pier

Pier fishing is an easy-going, inshore fishing experience—it’s on the docks, and generally doesn’t have a private captain. Charter fishing is always offshore, vs. pier fishing, which is always offshore, of course. This is the main difference between each. Another difference is Charter fishing has a captain accompanying you, whereas you are alone while pier fishing.

Time spent on the shores can be comforting, as they are steady, and usually promise a catch. While they may not be deep in the sea or targeting large beasts, they can be a simple, fun way to catch dinner. Fisherman Wharf’s largely built decks are great places to fish, and are sturdy for restful fishing trips.
