What should I bring on a Fishing Trip?

Okay – you’re ready to rock and roll for a fishing adventure with us. Here are some tips and things we recommend you bring.

  • Arrival Time | Please arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to your departure time. There is a required U.S.C.G. safety meeting that is held 15 minutes before departure time that all customers must attend prior to boarding the boat.
  • Sunscreen | We don’t want you coming back looking like a red snapper.
  • Sunglasses / Hat | Depending on that days weather, these can come in handy
  • Restrooms | The Wharf Cat and Scat Cat both have men’s and women’s bathroom facilities.
  • Camera | You want to make sure to have something to capture you reeling in the big one.
  • Towel | it’s always good to have something handy to wipe your hands with while fishing
  • Ice Chest | you’ll leave it in your vehicle during the trip but it will be there to take your catch home with you after the trip.
  • Food/Snacks | Both the Wharf Cat and Scat Cat provide a full concession snack bar for all trips, including hot/cold foods, drinks, snacks, etc. Outside food, drinks, and cooler are not allowed on board.
  • Cash / Credit Card | All major credit cards
  • Seasickness | While are twin-hull catamarans are large, displace more water than single hulls and typically provide a very smooth ride. Some times the sea doesn’t cooperate and may cause some individuals to experience seasickness symptoms. There are both prescribed and over-the-counter drugs available for this condition, but we recommend you speak with your physician before taking any medications related to seasickness symptoms.
  • Fishing Equipment | Each of the trips, we will be providing you with bait, rods, reels and tackle, so you do not need to worry about any fishing equipment or gear. The Scat Cat is equipped with electric tackle used on bottom fishing trips.

Can I purchase a fishing license @ Fisherman’s Wharf?

Unfortunately – we do not sell fishing licenses here at Fisherman’s Wharf. But here are a few places you are able to:

Remember – if you are 17 years of age or older. You are required to have a valid Texas Fishing License PRIOR to boarding either the Wharf Cat or Scat Cat.

Do I need to make a reservations for a Fishing Trip?

Yes – we highly recommend reservations on all fishing trips especially during the summer months. We do welcome walk-ons, but only when space is available.

What If I don’t want to fish, can I still come along?

Of course – we welcome you to come along for the trip even if you won’t be trying to reel in a big catch! We will offer you a discount price (child’s rate) to help cover our costs to make the trip happen.

What age is considered a child?

We consider a child’s age 12 and under and use that for our children pricing.

When is it considered Summer Season? Winter Season?

Here in Port Aransas – our fishing seasons start and end on two holidays.

Our summer season starts on Memorial Day and runs through Labor Day weekend.

Our winter season kicks in after Labor Day, until the following Memorial Day.

How many people can go fishing at a time?

We are able to accommodate up to 92 people at a time on both the Wharf Cat and Scat Cat for our fishing charters. We highly recommend you book a reservation, especially during our summer months.

Am I guaranteed to catch a fish on a trip?

Due to numerous factors outside of our control that can dictate each trips’ fish haul. We are unable to guarantee that everyone will catch a fish on each trip. What we can guarantee is that our crew and captains will leverage their skills and experience to do their best to ensure as many people possible catch fish on each trip. With that, we cannot offer any refunds if you or anyone one in your party ends your trip without a fish to take home.

Do I get to keep the fish that I catch?

Yup – unless the fish does not meet the legal size / limit regulations. For current fishing regulations, check out the link below:

Can Fisherman’s Wharf clean and store the fish I catch?

Yup – no doubt about it! From fish cleaning to packaging and storage – we offer a variety of services at our fish house. You are always more than welcome to take your fish with you and clean it yourself.

San José Island FAQ

How long does it take to get to San José Island?

From the time you board our Jetty Boat at our dock. You will be at San José Island dock in 5 – 10 minutes…depending on the channel “traffic” 🙂

What are my options to get to San José Island

With San Josê Island being privately owned and there is only 1 public way to access the island via the ferry. The ferry to San José island departs and returns multiple times a day from the Jetty Boat dock behind Fisherman’s Wharf.

Do I need to make reservations for San José Island?

We do take reservations but don’t require them for our San José Island Ferry Ride. We are limited with the number of people we are able to take on our Jetty Boat each trip, so reservations are highly recommended.

You are able to stay overnight and camp on the beach – just remember to pick up after yourself 🙂

What should I bring with me to San José Island?

It all depends on what you want to do.

  • If you want to fish: bring a fishing pole, tackle, bait, and gear if you want to do some awesome Jetty fishing!
  • If you want to relax on the beach: bring towels, chair, sunscreen, all your typically beach essentials.
  • If you want to explore, bring your binoculars and cameras for birding or buckets for collecting shells.
  • Remember – there are NO BUILDINGS and NO VEHICLES ALLOWED on San José island – so please plan accordingly!

    We offer rental pull carts to carry your belongings around while you are on the island. Just ask one of our team members upon arrival.

    Whooping Crane FAQ

    Can the Wharf Cat get as close to the whooping cranes as the smaller tour boats?

    Yes. Our shallow draft of 4 feet allows us to get “up close and personal” with the whoopers. Combining close access and the area’s highest observation deck makes for great viewing!

    Are children allowed on Wharf Cat Whooping Crane & Birding Boat Tours?

    Yes, children are allowed on our tours. We do not allow any running or horseplay on the Wharf Cat. Parents are responsible for their children and must not allow them in any way to disturb the other passengers aboard the boat

    How long does it take to arrive at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge aboard the Wharf Cat?

    When departing Rockport Harbor, the trip takes approximately 45 minutes. From Port Aransas, the time is approximately 1 1/2 hours. Keep your binoculars handy, as your narrator will be pointing out many species of birds along the way.

    Are there restrooms on board the Wharf Cat?

    Yes, both men’s and women’s facilities are available onboard.

    Will the birding tour be narrated?

    Yes, we are proud to have one of the finest birding experts on board.

    May I bring my own spotting scope?

    Absolutely! Although we do provide scopes at no charge, you will probably be more comfortable and accustomed to your own equipment.

    Will the boat be stopping for viewing and photographing the whooping cranes?

    Yes! The Wharf Cat is a catamaran with a shallow draft and can drift close to the shore. The boat captain will make several stops, allowing you to observe and photograph the cranes.

    Are reservations recommended?

    Yes! We are happy to reserve your trip aboard the Wharf Cat. Walk-ins are also welcome when space is available. We suggest that you give us a call (361-749-5760) to check availability.

    Are food and drink available on board the Wharf Cat?

    Yup! We provide a concession stand with hot and cold foods, as well as drinks, which are served in our heated/air conditioned cabin that can seat up to 84 people. No outside food, drink or coolers allowed.

    Are pets allowed on the Wharf Cat for the birding tours?

    No pets are allowed. Should this present a problem for travelers, we can provide you phone numbers for local kennels where you can leave your pet while you tour with us

    Will I get seasick on this trip?

    There are no guarantees that you won’t, but the Wharf Cat is a 75′ catamaran that provides an extremely smooth ride. Plus, this trip does not go into the Gulf, therefore the seas are much calmer. If you think that you might experience seasickness, there are over the counter and prescription drugs available for this condition and Fisherman’s Wharf recommends you consult a physician before using them.

    How long before departure should I arrive?

    Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure time. There is a U.S.C.G. required safety meeting 15 minutes before departure and all customers must attend this meeting before boarding the boat.

    What should I bring with me?

    Binoculars, scopes, cameras, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and money for the concessions. Depending on weather conditions, a jacket or coat, as the temperature is cooler on the water. Dressing in layers is recommended, for cooler mornings that warm up quickly.

    Is there a place to get out of the weather, while on board the Wharf Cat?

    Yes, there is a heated & air conditioned cabin with windows for viewing that seats up to 84 people.

    Are major credit cards accepted?

    Yes, all major U.S. credit cards are accepted.

    Are group rates available?

    Yes, we offer group rates, with a minimum of 10 people in your party. With larger groups, the discount increases and on all group rates, one person must pay for the entire group. Please call 361=749-5760 or 800-782-2473 for more information.

    Will this trip be cancelled due to rain?

    Nope! Actually, some of the best birding happens during not so great weather. The Wharf Cat does have a large, enclosed cabin with windows for viewing.

    Are gratuities for the crew and narrator included with my ticket?

    Nope, but they all work very hard to provide you with a great birding experience and all tips are appreciated.
